Barbell Shrugs Without Weight Plates: Dualbells vs Plates
Barbell shrugs are one of the simplest exercises you can do for your traps, upper back, grip, and overall pulling strength. The movement is straightforward: load the bar, stand tall, keep control, and shrug.
Most people think of barbell shrugs as a plate-loaded exercise. But if you train at home, you may not always have a full set of weight plates available. You may have dumbbells, a standard 1" bar, and limited space.
That is exactly where Dualbell dumbbell to barbell converters can help.
In this mirror-style comparison video, I perform barbell shrugs two ways. On one side, I use a bar loaded with traditional weight plates. On the other side, I use the same amount of weight loaded onto the bar with dumbbells and Dualbells.
Same exercise.
Same weight.
Different setup.
Plates optional.
Barbell Shrugs With Dualbells vs Plates
The purpose of this comparison is simple. I wanted to show what the same exercise looks like when performed with traditional plates versus dumbbells loaded onto the bar using Dualbell dumbbell converters.
For the plate side, the setup is what most people already recognize. Weight plates are loaded onto the bar and secured with collars.
For the Dualbell side, dumbbells are placed inside the Dualbells. The Dualbells then slide onto a standard 1" bar like plates and are secured with standard collars.
From there, the exercise is performed the same way.
That is the point.
Dualbells allow home gym users to use dumbbells as the load on a standard 1" bar, opening up more barbell-style exercise options without needing to rely only on traditional weight plates.
Why Shrugs Work Well With Dualbell Dumbbell Converters
Shrugs are a great exercise for showing how Dualbells work because the movement is easy to understand visually.
There is no complicated setup. There is no long learning curve. You are simply loading the bar and performing a controlled shrug.
For home gym users, this matters because many people already own dumbbells. What they may not have is a large collection of plates, extra storage space, or the budget to keep adding more equipment.
Dualbell dumbbell to barbell converters help make your existing dumbbells more versatile.
Instead of only using dumbbells for traditional dumbbell exercises, you can use them on a standard 1" bar for barbell-style movements such as shrugs, curls, presses, deadlifts, rows, squats, and more.
A Practical Home Gym Shrug Setup
For this barbell shrug setup, you need:
- A standard 1" bar
- Dumbbells
- Dualbell dumbbell converters
- Standard collars
Place the dumbbells into the Dualbells, close the Dualbells around the dumbbell handles, slide them onto the bar like plates, and lock them in with collars.
Once the bar is loaded, you are ready to perform barbell shrugs.
This setup is especially useful for small home gyms, garage gyms, basement gyms, and apartment workout spaces where storage space matters.
Dumbbells as Weight Plates
The phrase “dumbbells as weight plates” is really the heart of what Dualbell does.
Dualbells give dumbbells another job. Instead of sitting on the rack when you want to use a bar, your dumbbells can become the weight source for barbell-style exercises.
That can help you save space, reduce the need for extra plates, and get more training variety from the equipment you already own.
For shrugs, the result is simple:
Same shrug.
Same weight.
Plates optional.
