Using Dumbbells on a Standard Bar for Upright Rows

Using Dumbbells on a Standard Bar for Upright Rows

How to Set Up Upright Rows Without Weight Plates

Upright rows are a classic upper-body exercise that can help train the shoulders, traps, and upper back. They are often performed with a barbell, EZ curl bar, dumbbells, or cable attachment.

But if you train at home, you may not always have a full set of weight plates available. You may already own dumbbells and a standard 1" bar, but not want to add more plates, a plate tree, or extra equipment to your space.

That is where Dualbell dumbbell to barbell converters can help.

In this video, I show how I set up upright rows using dumbbells, Dualbells, a standard 1" bar, and collars. Instead of loading traditional plates onto the bar, the dumbbells become the load.

More exercises.
Less equipment.
Plates optional.

Upright Rows With Dumbbells on a Standard Bar

For this setup, I use:

  • A standard 1" bar
  • Dumbbells
  • Dualbell dumbbell converters
  • Standard collars

The process is simple.

Place the dumbbells into the Dualbells, close the Dualbells around the dumbbell handles, slide the loaded Dualbells onto the bar like plates, and secure them with collars.

Once everything is locked in, the bar is ready for upright rows.

This gives you a barbell-style upright row setup while still using the dumbbells you already own as the weight source.

Why This Setup Works Well in a Home Gym

Many home gym owners start with dumbbells because they are versatile, familiar, and easy to store. Dumbbells can be used for curls, presses, raises, rows, lunges, and many other exercises.

But over time, many people want to add more barbell-style movements to their training.

The challenge is that plates take up space, cost money, and add another storage issue.

Dualbell dumbbell to barbell converters help bridge that gap by allowing dumbbells to slide onto a standard 1" bar like plates. That means your dumbbells can do more than traditional dumbbell-only movements.

For upright rows, that means you can use your existing dumbbells to load the bar and perform the exercise in a familiar barbell-style way.

Upright Rows Without Weight Plates

If you are looking for a way to do upright rows without weight plates, this setup gives you a practical option.

You do not need a large plate collection to add more bar-based exercises to your home gym. With dumbbells, Dualbells, a standard 1" bar, and collars, you can create a simple upright row setup.

That can be especially helpful for garage gyms, basement gyms, apartment gyms, and small workout spaces where every piece of equipment needs to earn its place.

The goal is simple: get more use from the equipment you already own.

More Barbell-Style Exercises From Your Dumbbells

Upright rows are just one example.

Dualbells can also help you use dumbbells on a standard 1" bar for exercises like shrugs, curls, presses, rows, deadlifts, squats, and more.

Instead of thinking of your dumbbells as one category of equipment and your bar as another, Dualbell helps connect the two.

Your dumbbells become the load.
Your bar gives you more exercise options.
Your home gym becomes more versatile.
