My Dumbbells Are Always Working: Shrugs & More

Shrugs are one of the simplest exercises in strength training, but they remain one of the most effective ways to target the trapezius muscles.

Whether performed with dumbbells or a barbell, shrugs allow lifters to overload the upper back and traps using a straightforward movement pattern that is easy to learn and easy to incorporate into almost any workout routine.

In this video, I demonstrate shrugs in two different ways using the same dumbbells.

On one side, the exercise is performed as a traditional dumbbell shrug.

On the other, those same dumbbells are used as the load on a standard 1" bar with Dualbell dumbbell to barbell converters.

The result is a simple demonstration of what Dualbell is designed to do: help people get more from the equipment they already own.

Why Shrugs Work

Shrugs primarily target the trapezius muscles, which play an important role in shoulder stability, posture, and upper-body strength.

Both versions of the exercise have their advantages.

Dumbbell shrugs allow each arm to move independently and can feel natural and comfortable for many lifters.

Barbell shrugs make it easy to keep the load centered and often allow for heavier loading.
